Is your home going to be empty for a few days or weeks while you go out of town? That is when your home tends to be open to being burglarized. Here is what to do about it.
* The optimal defense for your apartment or home is to have a someone occupying the house. An apartment where someone is staying is usually safer than an unoccupied home. Try getting a friend or relative to stay at your apartment for the time you are away.
* Discontinue the mail delivery and newspaper delivery while you are away from home. A mailbox that is full or newspapers lying around tells unlawful elements that nobody is home.
* If you have potted plants visible from outside have them kept by someone regularly. Otherwise ensure that the potted plants are kept out of sight. Plants wilting from lack of water are a hint that the apartment is empty.
* Use timers on the lights, radio and tv. Use timers on lights in several rooms. The lights should turn on an off in a natural manner. At sunset turn on the living room lights. Around your normal sleeptime the living room lights should go off and the bedroom lights should switch on.
If you generally turn tv on at 8 pm most days and it remains on till midnight set your timer to that schedule. Though the lights are on the absence of the tv's bluish glow might be sufficient evidence that your house is empty.
* Ask a neighbor to drop in to your home now and then. Windows being open now and then denote that somebody is home.
* If you rent an apartment it may be useful to tell the landlord that the house will be empty. The houseowner may want to watch over the house.
* If you use any kind of security system make sure the person who is house sitting recognises exactly how to use it.
* Make it a point to see that the house sitter can reach you easily. The person responsbile for checking into the house must be aware of who they should call should a problem crop up.
