Is your apartment to be unoccupied for some days or weeks while you go on tour? That is when your apartment is susceptible to burglars breaking in. Here are several specific things you can do to deal with it.
* The better alternative is to arrange for a house sitter. Having someone in is almost always safer than an unoccupied home. Check if you can get a friend to stay at your house while you travel.
* Temporarily halt newspaper delivery and mail delivery while you are away. Unread newspaper and mail is a sign that your house is unoccupied.
* If you have potted plants that are visible get someone to water them. Otherwise move the potted plants where they cant be seen. Untended and wilted plants imply that no one is home now.
* Put lights and tv on timers. Timers should be hooked to lights in multiple rooms. The lights should be switched on and off in a natural sequence. The timer should switch on the living room lights at dusk. Afterwards put out the lights in your living room and the bedroom lights should switch on.
If you generally switch on tv at 7 pm and keep it on till 10 set the timer accordingly. Even with lights switched on the absence of the tv glow can give away that the house is empty.
* Get a neighbor to drop in on your house regularly. Doors and windows being opened gives evidence that the house is inhabited.
* If you rent the apartment tell the owner that you are going out of town. Your homeowner may want to keep an eye on it.
* If you use a burglar alarm system make it a point to see that the housesitter is familiar with exactly how to run it.
* See that the caretaker or house sitter can contact you. The person checking on the house must be well aware of who they should notify should a problem arise.
