* The most sensible alternative is to have a someone occupying the house. Having someone in is normally safer than an uninhabited home. Make arrangements for a trustworthy friend to remain at your apartment while you are away.

* See if a neighbor can come in and check out your apartment or home often. Curtains and windows being opened are all signs that somebody is home.
* If you rent the home it may be a good idea to notify the owner that the apartment or home will be empty. The owner may want to check on the home now and then.
* If you have a home security system installed see that the person who is house sitting is comfortable with how it is to be run.
* See to it that the neighbor can reach you easily. The person responsbile for checking into the house must be aware of who they should intimate should a problem arise.
