Is your house going to be empty for a few days or weeks while you and your family vacation out of town? That is the time your home is susceptible to break ins. Here are several specific things to do to deter thieves.
* The most effective solution is to get a home sitter. Having someone in is usually safer than a home that is not occupied. Arrange for a friend or someone you trust to live at your apartment while you travel.
* Halt your mail delivery and newspaper delivery while you are on vacation. A full mailbox or newspaper piled up calls attention to the fact that no one is home.
* If you have a garden or potted plants have them maintained by someone. Or Else shift the potted plants where they are not visible from the road. Untended plants are a clue that the house is not occupied.
* Use timers for radio, tv and lights. Lights in several rooms should be on timers. Use a natural looking sequence for the lights. The timer should switch on the living room lights at dusk. Subsequently the living room lights should be put out and turn on the bedroom lights.
If you commonly switch on tv at 9 and it remains on till midnight the timer should stick to those times too. The living room light may be on but the absence of the tv's light shining through might be enough evidence that no one is actually home.
* See if a neighbor will come in to your home regularly while you are away. Windows being opened and curtains being worked is evidence that the house is inhabited.
* If you live on rent notify the landlord that you are going on vacation. The landlord may want to check up on the home sometimes.
* If you have a security system installed see to it that the the person who is doing the house sitting is familiar with how to operate it.
* Ensure that the neighbor or house sitter can contact you. The person checking on the house should know who they should call should there be a problem.
