* The best way out is to arrange for a house sitter. A house where someone is staying is normally safer than an apartment that is not occupied. Try getting a friend or relative to remain at your home when you are away.

* If you have potted plants visible from outside get someone to maintain them. Otherwise move the potted plants away from sight. Plants not being cared for imply that the house is not occupied.
* Use timers on the lights, radio and tv. Use timers to control lights in many rooms. The lights should turn on an off in a natural manner. Turn on the living room lights at sunset. When you normally retire the living room lights should be put out and the lights in your bedroom should turn on.
If you usually switch tv on at 8 and keep it on till 10 set your timer to that schedule. Even with lights switched on the absence of the tv can give a clue that the house is empty.
* Get a neighbor to drop into your home regularly while you are away. Doors and windows being worked indicate that the house is occupied.
* If you live in a rented apartment it is usually a good idea to tell the owner that the apartment or home will be empty. The owner may want to check on it.
* If you use a perimeter protection or other security system make sure the housesitter is aware of exactly how to run it.
* See that the house sitter knows how to contact you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the apartment should know who is to be informed should any issue crop up.
