Is your home or apartment to be empty for many days while you go on tour? That is the time your home is susceptible to thieves breaking in. Here is what you should consider doing.
* The best defense for your home is to have someone stay at your apartment. Having someone stay at home is usually safer than a home or apartment that is unoccupied. Make arrangements for a trustworthy friend to stay at home at least during the nights for the time you are away.
* Stop your newspaper and mail when the house is empty. Mail spilling out of the mailbox tells unlawful elements that the home is empty.
* If you keep a garden have them maintained by someone. Or Else move the potted plants where they cant be seen. Uncared for plants inform housebreakers that the house is empty.
* Timers on lights and tv will help. Timers should be hooked to lights in multiple rooms. Use a natural looking sequence for the lights. Living room lights should come on at sundown. When you go to bed the living room lights should go off and switch on the bedroom lights.
If you generally switch on tv at 7 pm and have it on all evening till bedtime the timer should stick to those times too. The lights in the house may be on but the absence of the tv's bluish glow can give away that the home is unoccupied.
* See if a neighbor can drop in on your house regularly. Curtains and windows being opened gives evidence that somebody is home.
* If you rent a home you may want to notify your landlord that you are going out of town. Your houseowner may want to watch over it now and then.
* If you have an alarm or protection system installed make it a point to see that the the person who is doing the house sitting knows how to make it run.
* Ensure that the house sitter can reach you easily. The person responsbile for checking into the house must be aware of who should be informed should there be a problem.
