Is your apartment to be left empty for more than a day or two while you take a break out of town? That is the time your apartment or home is open to thieves breaking in. Here is a bunch of things to help make your home safer.

* The optimal defense for your apartment or home is to get someone staying at home. Having someone at home is almost always safer than an unoccupied apartment. Arrange for a trusted friend or relative to remain at your home for the time you are traveling.

* Discontinue the newspaper and mail delivery when the apartment is empty. A mailbox that is full or newspapers lying around announces that nobody is home.

* If you have potted plants passersby can see ask someone to maintain them. Or ensure the potted plants are not visible from outside. Untended and dying plants are a signal that the home or apartment is unoccupied.

* Put the lights and tv on timers. Use timers to control lights in many rooms. The way the lights are switched on and off should look natural. The lights in the living room should switch on at sunset. Around your normal sleeptime the lights in the living room should turn off and the lights in the bedroom should turn on.

If you normally turn on the tv at 7 pm and you keep it on till you turn in set the timer accordingly. Though the lights may be switched on the absence of the tv might be sufficient evidence that no one is home.

* Find out if a neighbor will agree to visit your home frequently. Windows and curtains being opened and closed mean that the apartment or home is occupied.

* If you stay at a rented home it may be useful to tell the landlord that you will be away. The landlord may want to keep an eye on it.

* If you have an alarm installed see that the person who is house sitting recognises just how to work it.

* Make sure the neighbor knows how to contact you. Whoever is checking on the home should be informed about who they should intimate should any problems come up.
