Advice on integrated security solutions and risk

Is your apartment or home to be unoccupied for a few days or weeks while you go on an outing? That is when your apartment is most susceptible to break ins. Here is what to stop break ins.

* The most effective solution is to have someone stay at your apartment. Having someone in is commonly safer than an unoccupied home. Try to arrange for a relative to stay at your house for the time you are away.

* Temporarily stop mail delivery and newspaper delivery when you travel out of town. A mailbox that is overflowing or piles of newspaper is a sign that the house is empty.

* If you have a garden or potted plants have them kept by someone regularly. Alternatively move the potted plants away from sight. Plants dying from lack of care give away that the apartment is empty.

* Put lights and tv on timers. Timers should be hooked to lights in multiple rooms. The lights should turn on an off in a natural manner. At dusk turn on the living room lights. Afterwards set the timer to switch off living room lights and turn on the bedroom lights.

If you generally switch on tv at 7 pm and it is always on till you go to bed have your timer do the same. Though the lights may be switched on the absence of the tv's bluish glow can clue in someone that this is an empty house.

* Ask a neighbor to drop in to your house regularly. Doors and windows being worked are indications that the home is occupied.

* If you rent the apartment notify the owner that the home will be unoccupied. Your landlord may want to check up on it regularly.

* If you use a burglar alarm system see that the house sitter is comfortable with just how to use it.

* Ensure that the neighbor knows how to contact you. Whoever is checking on the home must be well aware of who to call should there be a problem.
