Locating inexpensive exterior security cameras
Is your home going to be empty for days or weeks while you go out of station? That is the time your home is vulnerable to burglars breaking in. Here are several specific things to minimize chances of housebreaks.
* The best way out is to have a someone occupying the house. Having someone stay at home is almost always safer than an apartment that is not occupied. Try getting a friend or someone you trust to stay at home when you are traveling.
* Stop your newspaper and mail delivery when you go away. A mailbox filled to the brim advertises that the home is deserted.
* If you maintain potted plants or a garden get someone to come in and water them. Otherwise keep the potted plants of of sight. Uncared for plants convey that the house is not occupied.
* Use timers on the lights, radio and tv. Lights in several rooms should be on timers. Set the timers to make the light sequence look natural. The lights in the living room should switch on at sunset. Later the living room lights should be turned off and the bedroom lights should switch on.
If you generally turn tv on at 8 pm most days and it stays on till bed time set the timer accordingly. The lights in the house may be on but the absence of the tv's light shining through may indicate to outsiders that this house is unoccupied.
* Get a neighbor to come in and check out your apartment now and then. Windows being open now and then signals that the home is inhabited.
* If you rent a home or apartment you might notify the owner that the home will be unoccupied. Your landlord may want to watch over it now and then.
* If you have installed an alarm of protection system see to it that the person who is house sitting recognises just how to use it.
* See that the caretaker or house sitter can contact you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the apartment should be aware of who they should notify should a problem arise.
