Is your house to be left empty for some days or weeks while you go out of town? That is the time your apartment or home is most vulnerable to being burglarized. Here are several things to do.
* The best defense for your home is to get a home sitter. An apartment where someone is staying is usually safer than an empty apartment. Check if you can get a relative or a friend to live at your apartment while you are go away.
* Stop the mail and newspaper delivery while you are away. Piles of newspaper lying around publicises that the home is unoccupied.
* If you maintain potted plants that are visible from the road have them watered by someone. Or move the potted plants where they cant be seen. Wilted and dying plants convey to would be burglars that the house is uninhabited.
* It is a good idea to use timers on lights and tv. Use light timers in more than one room. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. At sunset turn on the living room lights. When it is time for bed put out the lights in your living room and the lights in your bedroom should turn on.
If you on the tv set at 7 pm most days and keep it on till 10 the timer must follow those timings. Though the lights are on the tv being turned off may lead someone to suspect that the home is empty.
* Find out if a neighbor will agree to come in to your home now and then. Doors and windows being opened are all signs that the home is occupied.
* If you rent an apartment maybe you can tell the landlord that the apartment will be empty. The homeowner may want to keep tabs on the apartment.
* If you have a burglar alarm installed make certain that the the person who is doing the house sitting is aware of how to use it.
* Ensure that the neighbor or house sitter can contact you. The person keeping an eye on the house should be aware of who they should contact should any issue crop up.
