* Put the lights and tv on timers. Lights in several rooms should be on timers. The lights should be switched on and off in a natural sequence. At sundown the living room lights should switch on. When you normally go to bed turn off the living room lights and the bedroom lights should be turned on.

* Arrange for a neighbor to drop in on your place often. Doors being opened and closed and windows too gives evidence that the house is inhabited.
* If you stay in a rented apartment it may be a good idea to notify the owner that you are going out of town. The homeowner may want to check up on the home sometimes.
* If you have an alarm installed ensure that the homesitter knows exactly how to operate it.
* See that the neighbor or house sitter can contact you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the home should be aware of who they should intimate if any issue should come up.
