Is your apartment or home to be unoccupied for a longish time while you and your family travel? That is when the house is susceptible to burglars breaking and entering it. Here are several specific things you should consider doing.
* The most advisable solution is to get someone staying at home. An apartment where someone is staying is usually safer than a home that is not occupied. See if you can get a relative to live at your apartment while you go on vacation.
* Temporarily stop newspaper delivery and mail delivery when you leave the home unoccupied. A mailbox that is full or newspapers lying around calls attention to the fact that the house is unoccupied.
* If you have potted plants that are visible arrange for them to be kept well. Alternatively move the potted plants where they cant be seen. Plants wilting from lack of water give away that no one is home.
* Use timers to operate lights and tv. Timers should be hooked to lights in multiple rooms. The way the lights are switched on and off should look natural. For example turn on the living room lights at sunset. Around the time your retire turn off the living room lights and switch on the bedroom lights.
If you normally turn on the tv at 7 pm and have it on till midnight or so the timer should stick to those times too. Though the lights are on the tv being turned off may reveal that the apartment or home is empty.
* Find out if a neighbor will agree to drop in and check on your house frequently. Windows being opened and closed etc are signs that the house is not empty.
* If you live on rent it is usually a good idea to tell the owner that you are going on vacation. Your landlord may want to watch over it now and then.
* If you use a security system see that the house sitter recognizes how to handle it.
* Ensure that the neighbor knows how to contact you. The person checking on the house must know who they should call if there is a problem.
