* The top way to secure your home is to have a keeper or sitter at home. Having someone at home is always safer than an unoccupied home. Arrange for a relative or friend to stay at your house for the time you are away.
* Discontinue your mail and newspaper for the entire time you are away. Unread newspaper and mail tells potential burglars that the home is empty.

If you generally switch on tv at 7 pm and have it on till bedtime set the timer accordingly. Even with lights switched on the absence of the tv might be sufficient evidence that your house is empty.
* Find out if a neighbor will agree to visit your home now and then. Curtains and windows being opened are all signs that the apartment or home is occupied.
* If you stay at a rented home perhaps you can tell your landlord that you are traveling. Your houseowner may want to check on the home regularly.
* If you have a burglar alarm installed make it a point to see that the homesitter is comfortable with precisely how to work it.
* Ensure that the house sitter or caretaker can reach you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the apartment must be aware of who they should contact should any issue crop up.
