* The best solution is to have someone stay at your apartment. Having someone stay at your home is almost always safer than an empty house. Arrange for a relative to hang out at your apartment while you are away.
* Stop your newspaper and mail delivery while you are on vacation. Piles of newspaper lying around is a sign that the home is unoccupied.
* If you keep a garden have them maintained by someone. Otherwise shift the potted plants where they are not visible from the road. Plants not being taken care of are a clue that the home is untenanted.
* Put lights, tv and radio on timers. Lights should be on timers in multiple rooms. Set the timers to make the light sequence look natural. The living room lights should come on at sundown. Subsequently at bedtime the living room should have lights off and the lights in your bedroom should turn on.
If you generally turn tv on at 8 pm most days and it remains on till 11 pm have your timer do the same. Though the lights may be switched on the absence of the tv's bluish glow may lead to suspiscion that the home is unoccupied.
* Request a neighbor to drop into your place often. Windows and curtains being opened denote that the house is not empty.
* If you rent an apartment you might let the landlord know that you will be out of station. Your landlord may want to keep tabs on the home.
* If you use a perimeter protection or other security system see that the person who is house sitting recognises exactly how to run it.
* Make it a point to see that the caretaker or house sitter can contact you. The person checking up on the apartment should be aware of who is to be informed if any issue should come up.
