Is your apartment to be unoccupied for days or weeks while you holiday? That is when the home usually is susceptible to burglaries. Here are several specific things to do to make your home safer.

* The best way out is to have a keeper or sitter at home. Having someone at home is always safer than a home that is not occupied. Check if you can get a friend or someone you trust to live at your apartment while you travel.

* Temporarily halt mail and newspaper when you leave the home unoccupied. Unread newspapers and an overflowing mailbox advertises that the home is unoccupied.

* If you have potted plants or a garden arrange for them to be watered and kept well. Or keep the potted plants of of sight. Untended plants are a hint that the house is empty.

* Use timers for tv and lights. Lights in several rooms should be on timers. Use a natural looking sequence for lights. Turn on the living room lights at sunset. Subsequently the living room lights should be put out and switch on the bedroom lights.

If you normally turn on the tv at 7 pm and it is always on till you go to bed the timer should do the same thing. Even if the lights are on the absence of the bluish tv glow can give a clue that no one is actually home.

* See if a neighbor will drop in to your house regularly. Windows being open now and then gives evidence that somebody is home.

* If you rent the apartment or house let the landlord know that you are going on vacation. The houseowner may want to keep an eye on it.

* If you use any kind of security system see to it that the apartment sitter knows how to make it work.

* Make it a point to see that the neighbor knows how to contact you. The person watching over the house must be aware of who they should call should any issues come up.
