Is your apartment to be left empty for a longish time while you go vacationing? That is when it usually is most vulnerable to thieves breaking in. Here are several things you can do.
* The optimal defense for your apartment or home is to have a house sitter. Having someone stay at your home is always safer than an unoccupied home. See if you can get a trustworthy friend to remain at your apartment for the time you are traveling.
* Stop the mail and newspaper delivery while you are away from home. Untouched mail and newspaper tells everyone that no one is home.
* If you maintain potted plants or a garden get someone to come in and water them. Otherwise ensure that the potted plants are kept where they are not visible. Uncared for plants suggest that the house is uninhabited.
* Put lights and tv on timers. Several rooms should have timers on lighting. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. Living room lights should come on at sundown. Later put out the lights in your living room and the bedroom lights should switch on.
If you on the tv set at 7 pm most days and it remains on till midnight have your timer do the same. Though the lights may be on the tv being off can be a sign that this is an empty house.
* Get a neighbor to come in and check out your home on a regular basis. Doors being opened and closed and windows too convey that the house is not empty.
* If you stay in a rented apartment it may be useful to tell the landlord that the house will be empty. The homeowner may want to check up on the home sometimes.
* If you have an active alarm system make it a point to see that the house sitter knows exactly how to use it.
* See that the house sitter can reach you easily. The person checking on the house must be aware of who they should fill in should there be a problem.
