Here is what to help make your home safer. * The most advisable solution is to have a someone occupying the house. A house where someone is staying is normally safer than a house that is empty. Check if you can get a trusted friend or relative to stay at your apartment for the time you are traveling. * Halt the newspaper and mail when the house is empty. Mail spilling out of the mailbox announces that the house is unoccupied. * If you maintain a garden get someone to water them. Or shift the potted plants where they are not visible from the road. Plants dying from lack of care are a hint that the home is empty. * Timers on lights and tv will help. Lights should be on timers in multiple rooms. Use a natural looking sequence for the lights. The timer should turn living room lights on at sundown. When it is time for bed turn off the living room lights and switch on the bedroom lights. If you ordinarily switch on tv at 8 pm everyday and have it on all evening till bedtime the timer must follow those timings. Though the lights may be on the absence of the tv's bluish glow can clue in someone that no one is really home. * Request a neighbor to visit your home frequently. Windows and curtains being opened and closed are all signs that the house is inhabited. * If you live in a rented apartment tell the landlord that the apartment will be empty. Your landlord may want to keep tabs on the apartment. * If you have a security system installed see that the the person who is doing the house sitting recognises how it is to be operated. * Make it a point to see that you leave your contact details with the house sitter. Whoever is watching over the home must know exactly who to call if any issue should come up.
