* The best security for your apartment is to have a house sitter. Having someone stay at your home is almost always safer than an uninhabited home. See if you can get a relative or a friend to live at your house when you are away.
* Discontinue the mail and newspaper for the entire time you are away. A full mailbox or newspaper piled up is a sure sign that your home is empty.
* If you maintain potted plants or a garden get someone to maintain them. Alternatively remove the potted plants away from sight. Plants not being cared for are a sign that no one is home now.
* Use timers for radio, tv and lights. Timers should be hooked to lights in multiple rooms. The way the lights are switched on and off should look natural. At dusk the lights in the living room should be turned on. When you normally retire set the timer to switch off living room lights and the lights in your bedroom should turn on.
If you turn on tv at 7 pm every day and it stays on till bed time set the timer accordingly. The lights in the house may be on but the tv being turned off may lead someone to suspect that no one is really home.
* See if a neighbor will drop into your place often. Doors and windows being worked signals that somebody is home.
* If you stay in a rented house let the owner know that you will be out of station. The homeowner may want to keep an eye on it.
* If you have installed a burglar alarm make it a point to see that the home sitter recognises how to work it.
* See that you leave your contact details with the neighbor. The person keeping an eye on the house must be aware of who they should notify should there be a problem.
