Is your house to be left empty for some days or weeks while you take a break out of town? That is when your home is vulnerable to burglaries. Here is what to do about it.
* The best deterrant is to have a house sitter. A house where someone is staying is always safer than an uninhabited apartment. Make arrangements for a relative to remain at your home while you are go away.
* Stop your newspaper and mail delivery when the house is empty. Untouched mail and newspaper lets everyone know that nobody is home.
* If you potted plants visibly placed have them watered by someone. Otherwise shift the potted plants where they are not visible from the road. Untended and wilted plants give away that the apartment is empty.
* Use timers on the lights, radio and tv. Several rooms should have timers on lighting. Use a natural looking sequence for the lights. Living room lights should come on at sundown. Subsequently at bedtime the lights in the living room should turn off and the lightsin the bedroom should switch on.
If you usually turn the tv on at 8 pm and have it on till midnight or so the timer should stick to those times too. Even with lights switched on the lack of light from the tv may lead to suspiscion that no one is home.
* Arrange for a neighbor to drop in to your house regularly. Windows being opened and closed etc denote that the home is occupied.
* If you rent an apartment notify the landlord that you are traveling. Your houseowner may want to check on the home regularly.
* If you have a home security system installed see to it that the house sitter is aware of how it is to be used.
* Make certain that the caretaker or house sitter can contact you. The person watching over the house must know who they should contact if any issue should come up.
