Home: Home Security Systems Faq
Notes on home security systems faqIs your house going to be unoccupied for a longish time while you and your family vacation out of town? That is when your apartment is vulnerable to looters breaking in. Here is what and ideas to deal with it. * The best security for your apartment is to have someone stay at your apartment. Having someone stay at your home is almost always safer than an empty apartment. Try to get a friend or someone you trust to live at your house when you are traveling. * Halt the mail and newspaper when the apartment is empty. Unread newspaper and mail publicises that the house is unoccupied. * If you have potted plants that are visible have them kept by someone regularly. Or Else move the potted plants out of sight. Dying plants convey to would be burglars that the house is uninhabited. * Put the lights and tv on timers. Lights in multiple rooms should be on timers. The lights should turn on an off in a natural manner. The timer should turn living room lights on at sundown. When you normally hit the sack set the timer to switch off living room lights and the bedroom lights should be turned on. If you usually switch tv on at 8 and have it on all evening till bedtime the timer should stick to those times too. The living room light may be on but the absence of light from the tv may reveal that your house is empty. * See if a neighbor can drop in and check on your home frequently. Doors and windows being worked gives evidence that the house is not empty. * If you stay in a rented apartment let the landlord know that you are going out of town. The homeowner may want to watch over it now and then. * If you have an alarm system installed make certain that the house sitter is comfortable with how to work it. * Make sure the neighbor or house sitter can contact you. Whoever is watching over the home should know exactly who to call if there is a problem.
