Is your house to be left empty for sometime while you vacation out of town? That is when your apartment is vulnerable to looters. Here are several specific things that will help you.
* The most effective defense is to have a keeper or sitter at home. Having someone in is normally safer than an uninhabited apartment. Arrange for a friend or someone you trust to stay at your apartment while you are away.
* Halt your newspaper and mail when you travel out of town. Unread newspaper and mail informs potential thieves that the home is deserted.
* If you potted plants visibly placed arrange for them to be watered and kept well. Or ensure that the potted plants are kept out of sight. Plants wilting from lack of water give away that the apartment is empty.
* It is a good idea to use timers on lights and tv. Use light timers in more than one room. Set the timers to make the light sequence look natural. The timer should switch on the living room lights at dusk. Subsequently the living room should have lights off and turn on the bedroom lights.
If you normally turn on the tv at 7 pm and keep in on till 11 pm set your timer to that schedule. Even with lights switched on the absence of light from the tv might indicate that this house is unoccupied.
* Find out if a neighbor will agree to drop in and check on your home now and then. Windows being open now and then are indications that the home is occupied.
* If you rent the home you might let the landlord know that you will be out of station. Your landlord may want to keep tabs on the home.
* If you use a home security system make it a point to see that the person who is house sitting is aware of just how to work it.
* Ensure that you leave your contact details with the house sitter. Whoever is watching over the home should know exactly who to call should any problems come up.
