Is your house to be left unoccupied for days or weeks while you go on vacation? That is when the house is most vulnerable to burglars breaking and entering it. Here are several things you should consider doing.
* The best way to defend your apartment is to have a sitter at home. An apartment where someone is staying is commonly safer than a home that is not occupied. Make arrangements for a friend to stay at home at least during the nights for the time you are traveling.
* Stop your mail and newspaper for the entire time you are away. A mailbox that is full or newspapers lying around publicises that the home is unoccupied.
* If you have potted plants visible from outside get someone to maintain them. Otherwise move the potted plants where they cant be seen. Uncared for plants tell passersby that the home is untenanted.
* Put the lights and tv on timers. Use timers to control lights in many rooms. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. At sunset turn on the living room lights. When you normally go to bed the living room lights should go off and switch on the bedroom lights.
If you turn tv on at 7 most days and you keep it on till you turn in set the timer accordingly. Though the lights may be on the tv being turned off may lead someone to suspect that the house is uninhabited.
* See if a neighbor will drop in on your home on a regular basis. Doors being opened and closed and windows too are all signs that the home is inhabited.
* If you rent the apartment it is usually a good idea to tell the owner that the apartment or home will be empty. The houseowner may want to check on it.
* If you have an alarm installed make it a point to see that the the person who is doing the house sitting is comfortable with how it is to be run.
* Make sure the neighbor can reach you easily. The person responsbile for checking into the house must be well aware of who they should notify should a problem crop up.
