Is your house going to be empty for a few days while you go on an outing? That is when it generally is susceptible to burglaries and housebreaks. Here are several specific things you might want to do.

* The better alternative is to get someone staying at home. A house where someone is staying is usually safer than a home or apartment that is unoccupied. Try getting a friend or relative to hang out at your home for the time you are away.

* Temporarily stop mail and newspaper delivery while you are away. Mail spilling out of the mailbox tells potential burglars that no one is home.

* If you maintain potted plants that are visible from the road arrange for them to be kept well. Or Else remove the potted plants away from sight. Untended and dying plants are a sign that the home is unoccupied.

* Use timers for tv and lights. Lights in several rooms should be on timers. The lights should be switched on and off in a natural sequence. For example turn on the living room lights at sunset. Later the lights in your living room should be switched off and the lights in your bedroom should turn on.

If you turn on tv at 7 pm every day and it remains on till 11 pm have your timer do the same. The lights may be on but the tv being off might give away that no one is actually home.

* See if a neighbor can drop into your apartment or home often. Windows and curtains being worked denote that somebody is home.

* If you rent a home you may want to let your landlord know that the house will be unoccupied. Your houseowner may want to check on the home now and then.

* If you have installed a home security system see to it that the apartment sitter recognises how to make it work.

* Ensure that the caretaker or house sitter can contact you. The person checking on the house must know who they should contact if any issue should come up.
