Is your apartment or home to be unoccupied for even a few days while you leave town? That is when it is vulnerable to burglaries. Here is what to do to make your home safer.

* The best way out is to have a keeper or sitter at home. Having someone stay at home is commonly safer than an empty house. Try to get a relative or friend to remain at your home while you travel.

* Discontinue your newspaper and mail when the apartment is empty. A full mailbox or newspaper piled up advertises that the home is empty.

* If you keep a garden get someone to come in and water them. Alternatively shift the potted plants where they are not visible from the road. Plants not being cared for tell the observer that the home or apartment is unoccupied.



* Put lights, tv and radio on timers. Use timers on lights in several rooms. Set the timers to make the light sequence look natural. The living room lights should come on at sundown. Afterwards the living room lights should be put out and the bedroom lights should switch on.

If you ordinarily switch on tv at 8 pm everyday and it stays switched on till its time for you to turn in the timer must follow those timings. Though the lights may be on the absence of the bluish tv glow may lead to suspiscion that no one is home.

* Ask a neighbor to drop in to your apartment on a regular basis. Doors and windows being worked mean that the house is not empty.

* If you stay at a rented home notify the owner that the house will be empty. The owner may want to check on the apartment or home regularly.

* If you have an alarm or protection system installed see to it that the housesitter knows precisely how to operate it.

* Make it a point to see that the caretaker or house sitter can contact you. The person keeping an eye on the house must be aware of who they should notify should any issues come up.
