Is your house going to be empty for even a few days while you go on a holiday? That is when your apartment is open to looters. Here are several specific things you can do to deal with it.
* The best way to defend your apartment is to get a home sitter. An apartment where someone is staying is almost always safer than an uninhabited home. Make arrangements for a friend to remain at your home while you are away.
* Temporarily halt mail delivery and newspaper delivery while you are away. Mail spilling out of the mailbox tells potential burglars that the house is unoccupied.
* If you keep a garden have them maintained by someone. Or keep the potted plants of of sight. Untended and wilted plants are a hint that the apartment is empty.
* Use timers on the lights, radio and tv. Timers should run lights in several rooms. The lights should turn on an off in a natural manner. At dusk the lights in the living room should be turned on. Subsequently at bedtime the lights in your living room should be switched off and switch on the bedroom lights.
If you normally turn on the tv at 7 pm and keep it on till 10 the timer should stick to those times too. Though the lights may be switched on the absence of the bluish tv glow can give a clue that the house is uninhabited.
* Ask a neighbor to come in and check out your apartment now and then. Windows and curtains being opened denote that the house is occupied.
* If you stay at a rented home let the owner know that you are going on vacation. Your homeowner may want to check on the home now and then.
* If you have a home security system installed make it a point to see that the house sitter is aware of how to handle it.
* Make certain that the house sitter can reach you easily. Whoever is watching over the home must be well aware of who to call should any issue crop up.
