Tips about home security information locks

Is your apartment or home to be unoccupied for more than a day or two while you leave town? That is when your home tends to be most vulnerable to thieves breaking in. Here are several things to do to make your home safer.

* The best way to defend your apartment is to get a home sitter. Having someone stay at home is almost always safer than a deserted home. Arrange for a friend to remain at your apartment for the time you are traveling.

* Temporarily halt mail and newspaper delivery when the house is empty. An overflowing mailbox advertises that the home is unoccupied.

* If you maintain potted plants that are visible from the road get someone to come in and water them. Otherwise shift the potted plants where they are not visible from the road. Plants not being taken care of tell potential burglars that the house is empty.

* Put lights, tv and radio on timers. Lights in multiple rooms should be on timers. Use a natural looking sequence for the lights. At sundown the living room lights should switch on. At your regular bedtime the lights in the living room should turn off and the lights in the bedroom should turn on.

If you ordinarily switch on tv at 8 pm everyday and it remains on till midnight have the timer set accordingly. Even with lights switched on the absence of the tv glow may lead someone to suspect that no one is home.

* See if a neighbor can come in to your home frequently. Curtains and windows being opened points out that the house is occupied.

* If you rent the home tell the landlord that you are going out of town. The owner may want to check up on the home sometimes.

* If you have a security system installed make it a point to see that the apartment sitter recognises how to make it work.

* See to it that the house sitter or caretaker can reach you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the apartment should be informed about exactly who to call should any issue crop up.
