* The optimal defense for your apartment or home is to arrange for a house sitter. Having someone stay at your home is commonly safer than an apartment that is not occupied. Try to get a relative or friend to stay at your apartment when you are away.

* Use timers for tv and lights. Use light timers in more than one room. The lights should turn on an off in a natural manner. Living room lights should come on at sundown. When you go to bed the living room lights should be turned off and turn on the bedroom lights.
If you generally turn tv on at 8 pm most days and it stays on till bed time set the timer accordingly. Even if the lights are on the absence of the bluish tv glow may indicate to outsiders that the house is empty.
* Request a neighbor to come in to your home on a regular basis. Doors and windows being opened mean that the home is inhabited.
* If you live in a rented apartment you may want to notify your landlord that you will be out of station. The landlord may want to check up on it regularly.
* If you have an alarm or protection system installed see that the the person who is doing the house sitting recognises exactly how to run it.
* Make it a point to see that you leave your contact details with the neighbor. Whoever is watching over the home should be informed about who is to be informed should there be a problem.
