The scoop about home security design project

Is your home going to be empty for a few days while you go on tour? That is when it generally is open to housebreaks. Here are several things and ideas to deal with it.

* The most effective solution is to have a house sitter. Having someone stay at home is usually safer than an uninhabited home. Make arrangements for a trustworthy friend to stay at home at least during the nights while you travel.

* Discontinue your newspaper and mail delivery when you travel out of town. Mail and newspapers lying around is a sure sign that your house is empty.

* If you have potted plants that are visible have them kept by someone regularly. Otherwise ensure that the potted plants are kept where they are not visible. Untended and dying plants suggest that the home is untenanted.

* Put the lights and tv on timers. Put lights in several rooms on timers. Set the timers to make the light sequence look natural. For example turn on the living room lights at sunset. Subsequently the living room should have lights off and the bedroom lights should be turned on.

If you usually switch tv on at 8 and keep in on till 11 pm set your timer to that schedule. Though the lights may be on the absence of the tv can give a clue that no one is really home.

* Arrange for a neighbor to drop in on your home regularly while you are away. Windows and curtains being opened and closed denote that the house is not empty.

* If you rent an apartment you may want to let your landlord know that the house will be empty. Your homeowner may want to check on it.

* If you have installed a security system make sure the home sitter knows how to operate it.

* See to it that the house sitter or caretaker can reach you. The person checking up on the apartment must be aware of who they should contact should any issue crop up.
