Is your house to be left unoccupied for days or weeks while you go out of town? That is when it tends to be most vulnerable to looters. Here are several things to do about it.
* The most sensible alternative is to arrange for a house sitter. Having someone at home is normally safer than an empty house. Try arranging for a relative to stay at home when you are away.
* Stop the newspaper delivery and mail delivery when you go away. Piles of newspaper lying around lets everyone know that the home is empty.

If you commonly switch on tv at 9 and keep in on till 11 pm set the timer accordingly. Even with lights switched on the tv being off can be a sign that this house is unoccupied.
* Request a neighbor to come in to your apartment on a regular basis. Windows being open now and then are signs that the house is not empty.
* If you live in a rented home let the landlord know that the house will be empty. Your homeowner may want to keep tabs on the apartment.
* If you have installed an alarm of protection system ensure that the the person who is doing the house sitting recognises how to use it.
* See that the house sitter can reach you easily. The person keeping an eye on the house should be aware of who they should contact should a problem crop up.
