Is your house going to be empty for a few days while you go on a holiday? That is the time your home is susceptible to thieves breaking in. Here is what you might want to do.
* The optimal defense for your apartment or home is to have a sitter at home. Having someone stay at your home is almost always safer than a home or apartment that is unoccupied. Check if you can get a trusted friend or relative to stay at your house while you are away.
* Discontinue the mail delivery and newspaper delivery when the house is empty. A mailbox that is overflowing or piles of newspaper publicises that the house is empty.
* If you maintain a garden have them watered by someone. Otherwise remove the potted plants away from sight. Plants wilting from lack of water are a sign that the home is empty.
* Put lights, tv and radio on timers. Lights should be on timers in multiple rooms. Use a natural looking sequence for lights. At sunset turn on the living room lights. At the time you go to bed put out the lights in your living room and the lights in your bedroom should turn on.
If you on the tv set at 7 pm most days and have it on all evening till bedtime the timer should do the same thing. The living room light may be on but the absence of the tv glow can clue in someone that your house is empty.
* Get a neighbor to come in to your home regularly while you are away. Windows being opened and curtains being worked gives evidence that the house is inhabited.
* If you stay at a rented home it may be useful to tell the landlord that you are traveling. The homeowner may want to check up on the home sometimes.
* If you have a security system installed see that the house sitter recognizes how it is to be operated.
* See to it that the house sitter knows how to contact you. The person keeping an eye on the house should be aware of who they should call should any issues come up.
