Is your home or apartment to be empty for days or weeks while you go on an outing? That is when your home is open to housebreaks. Here is a bunch of things to do to defend your home.
* The best solution is to get someone staying at home. A house where someone is staying is very likely safer than an uninhabited home. Arrange for a friend to stay at your apartment while you go on vacation.
* Temporarily halt mail and newspaper while you are on vacation. Unread newspaper and mail announces that the house is unoccupied.
* If you potted plants visibly placed get someone to come in and water them. Alternatively move the potted plants where they cant be seen. Plants wilting slowly tell passersby that the house is not occupied.
* Timers on lights and tv will help. Timers should be hooked to lights in multiple rooms. The timings for lights should look natural. The lights in the living room should switch on at sunset. When you go to bed the living room should have lights off and the lights in the bedroom should turn on.
If you ordinarily switch on tv at 8 pm everyday and it remains on till 11 pm have your timer do the same. Though the lights may be switched on the absence of the bluish tv glow might be enough evidence that no one is home.
* See if a neighbor can come in and check out your apartment now and then. Windows and curtains being opened signals that somebody is home.
* If you rent a home it may be a good idea to notify the owner that you are going on vacation. Your houseowner may want to watch over it now and then.
* If you have an alarm installed make it a point to see that the the person who is doing the house sitting is comfortable with how to make it run.
* Make sure you leave your contact details with the house sitter. Whoever is checking on the home must be well aware of who they should contact should there be a problem.
