Is your house going to be unoccupied for a few days while you go vacationing? That is when the home usually is open to looters breaking in. Here is what to do about it.
* The most sensible alternative is to have a keeper or sitter at home. Having someone stay at home is very likely safer than a home that is not occupied. Try to get a trustworthy friend to remain at your home while you are away.
* Discontinue the newspaper and mail when you leave the home unoccupied. Piles of newspaper lying around informs potential thieves that the home is unoccupied.
* If you have potted plants that are visible have them maintained by someone. Or move the potted plants out of sight. Dying plants are a signal that the apartment is unoccupied.
* Use timers to operate lights and tv. Several rooms should have timers on lighting. The lights should be switched on and off in a natural sequence. The timer should turn living room lights on at sundown. At the time you go to bed the lights in the living room should turn off and the lights in the bedroom should turn on.
If you ordinarily switch on tv at 8 pm everyday and keep it on till 10 have the timer set accordingly. Though the lights may be switched on the tv being off may lead to suspiscion that no one is actually home.
* See if a neighbor will visit your home regularly while you are away. Windows being open now and then convey that the home is occupied.
* If you rent an apartment it is usually a good idea to tell the owner that you will be away. The owner may want to check up on the home sometimes.
* If you have installed a home security system make certain that the house sitter is familiar with how it is to be used.
* Make it a point to see that the house sitter can reach you easily. The person watching over the house should be aware of who they should call should any problems come up.
