* The best way out is to have someone stay at your apartment. A house where someone is staying is usually safer than an uninhabited apartment. Try arranging for a trustworthy friend to live at your house when you are away.
* Temporarily discontinue newspaper and mail delivery while you are away. Unread newspaper and mail is a sign that the house is empty.

* Use timers to work tv and lights. Use timers on lights in several rooms. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. At dusk turn on the living room lights. At the time you turn in living room should turn dark and the lights in the bedroom should be switched on.
If you normally turn on the tv at 7 pm and keep it on till 10 set your timer to that schedule. The lights may be on but the tv being turned off might indicate that the house is empty.
* Request a neighbor to come in and check out your apartment or home often. Doors being opened and closed and windows too are all signs that the home is occupied.
* If you rent the home perhaps you can let the owner or landlord know that the home will be unoccupied. Your houseowner may want to watch over it now and then.
* If you use an alarm system ensure that the apartment sitter recognizes how to make it work.
* See to it that the house sitter or caretaker can reach you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the apartment must know exactly who to call should a problem crop up.
