* If you maintain potted plants that are visible from the road get someone to water them. Or ensure the potted plants are not visible from outside. Wilted and dying plants are a signal that nobody is home.
* Timers on lights and tv will help. Use timers to control lights in many rooms. Use a natural looking sequence for the lights. For example turn on the living room lights at sunset. Around your normal sleeptime the lights in the living room should turn off and the bedroom lights should switch on.
If you generally switch on tv at 7 pm and it is always on till you go to bed the timer should stick to those times too. Though the lights may be switched on the absence of the tv might be sufficient evidence that the house is uninhabited.
* Find out if a neighbor will agree to come in to your house regularly. Curtains and windows being opened are indications that the house is not empty.
* If you rent the apartment or house tell the landlord that you are going out of town. The landlord may want to check up on the home sometimes.
* If you have a security system installed make sure the homesitter knows how it is to be operated.
* Make certain that the neighbor knows how to contact you. Whoever is watching over the home should know who they should call should a problem arise.
