* The best deterrant is to have a someone occupying the house. Having someone in is normally safer than an uninhabited apartment. Make arrangements for a friend or relative to hang out at your home while you are away.
* Temporarily halt newspaper delivery and mail delivery when you go on vacation. A full mailbox or newspaper piled up lets everyone know that the home is empty.
* If you have potted plants visible from outside ensure that someone waters them. Or keep the potted plants of of sight. Plants wilting slowly are evidence that the house is empty.
* It is a good idea to use timers on lights and tv. Several rooms should have timers on lighting. Set the timers to make the light sequence look natural. At sundown the living room lights should switch on. Later the living room should have lights off and the lights in the bedroom should turn on.
If you generally turn tv on at 8 pm most days and it stays on till bed time the timer should do the same thing. Though the lights are on the lack of the tv's bluish glow may reveal that this is an empty house.
* See if a neighbor will drop in to your house frequently. Windows being opened and closed etc gives evidence that the apartment or home is occupied.
* If you stay at a rented home notify the owner that the home will be unoccupied. The homeowner may want to keep an eye on it.
* If you have a burglar alarm installed make it a point to see that the house sitter is familiar with how it is to be run.
* Ensure that the house sitter can reach you easily. Whoever is checking on the home should be informed about who to call if there is a problem.
