Is your house going to be empty for even a few days while you travel on vacation? That is when it usually is most susceptible to housebreaks. Here is what to help harden your home against burglaries.
* The most effective solution is to get someone staying at home. Having someone stay at your home is usually safer than an apartment that is not occupied. Try getting a friend to remain at your apartment for the time you are traveling.
* Discontinue the mail and newspaper delivery when you travel out of town. A mailbox filled to the brim tells everyone that the home is unoccupied.
* If you have a garden or potted plants get someone to come in and water them. Alternatively shift the potted plants where no one can see them. Dying plants are another sign that the apartment is unoccupied.
* Use timers on the lights, radio and tv. Lights in multiple rooms should be on timers. The way the lights are switched on and off should look natural. For example turn on the living room lights at sunset. When you normally retire turn off the living room lights and the bedroom lights should be turned on.
If you turn on tv at 7 pm every day and it remains on till midnight set the timer accordingly. The lights in the house may be on but the lack of light from the tv can clue in someone that no one is actually home.
* Get a neighbor to drop into your home frequently. Doors and windows being opened signals that somebody is home.
* If you rent the apartment let the landlord know that you are going on vacation. Your landlord may want to check on the home now and then.
* If you have installed an alarm system make certain that the housesitter is comfortable with how to use it.
* Make sure the house sitter knows how to contact you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the home should be informed about who is to be informed if any issue should come up.
