* The best security for your apartment is to arrange for a house sitter. An apartment where someone is staying is always safer than a home or apartment that is unoccupied. Make arrangements for a friend or relative to stay at home while you are away.
* Temporarily stop mail and newspaper when you leave the home unoccupied. Piles of newspaper lying around informs potential thieves that your house is unoccupied.

If you turn tv on at 7 most days and keep it on till 10 have the timer set accordingly. The lights may be on but the absence of the tv's light shining through may lead someone to suspect that this is an empty house.
* See if a neighbor can drop in and check on your home on a regular basis. Doors and windows being opened gives evidence that the home is occupied.
* If you stay in a rented house perhaps you can let the owner or landlord know that you will be out of station. The homeowner may want to check on the apartment or home regularly.
* If you have a burglar alarm installed make sure the person who is house sitting recognizes just how to work it.
* Ensure that the house sitter or caretaker can reach you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the home must be aware of who is to be informed should there be a problem.
