Facts about exterior home video surveillance

Is your house to be left empty for days or weeks while you take a much needed break away from town? That is the time your home is open to looters. Here is a bunch of things to do about it.

* The best way to defend your apartment is to have a sitter at home. Having someone in is always safer than an uninhabited home. Try arranging for a friend to hang out at your home while you travel.

* Temporarily halt mail and newspaper while you are away. A mailbox that is full or newspapers lying around lets everyone know that the home is unoccupied.

* If you have potted plants visible from outside have them maintained by someone. Or shift the potted plants where no one can see them. Plants wilting slowly are an indication that the apartment is empty.

* Use timers for radio, tv and lights. Lights in several rooms should be on timers. The lights should turn on an off in a natural manner. The living room lights should come on at sundown. When it is time for bed the lights in your living room should be switched off and the lights in your bedroom should turn on.

If you usually switch tv on at 8 and have it on till bedtime have the timer set accordingly. Though the lights may be switched on the absence of light from the tv can be a sign that no one is home.

* See if a neighbor can drop in and check on your home on a regular basis. Windows being opened and curtains being worked gives evidence that the house is not empty.

* If you live in a rented home perhaps you can let the owner or landlord know that you will be away. The houseowner may want to check on it.

* If you have installed an alarm system make certain that the house sitter is familiar with how it is to be run.

* Make it a point to see that the caretaker or house sitter can contact you. The person keeping an eye on the house should be aware of who they should intimate should a problem crop up.
