Is your apartment to be left empty for many days while you go on an outing? That is when your home tends to be most vulnerable to break ins. Here is what to do.
* The best defense for your home is to get a home sitter. An apartment where someone is staying is almost always safer than a home that is not occupied. Make arrangements for a relative or friend to remain at your apartment while you are away.
* Halt your newspaper and mail delivery when the apartment is empty. Unread newspaper and mail is a sign that the home is deserted.
* If you maintain potted plants or a garden ask someone to maintain them. Otherwise move the potted plants where they cant be seen. Untended and wilted plants are a sign that nobody is home.
* It is a good idea to use timers on lights and tv. Timers should be hooked to lights in multiple rooms. The lights should turn on an off in a natural manner. At sundown the living room lights should switch on. Later set the timer to switch off living room lights and the lights in the bedroom should be switched on.
If you turn tv on at 7 most days and it is always on till you go to bed set the timer accordingly. The living room light may be on but the absence of the tv's bluish glow may lead to suspiscion that your house is empty.
* Arrange for a neighbor to visit your home regularly while you are away. Windows being open now and then are indications that the home is occupied.
* If you rent a home or apartment you might notify the owner that you are going on vacation. The landlord may want to check up on the home sometimes.
* If you have an alarm or protection system installed make sure the homesitter is aware of how to use it.
* See that the neighbor knows how to contact you. The person responsbile for checking into the house should know who is to be informed if there is a problem.
