Is your apartment to be unoccupied for several days while you go on vacation? That is when it is most susceptible to looters breaking in. Here are several specific things you can do about it.
* The better alternative is to have a keeper or sitter at home. Having someone stay at your home is usually safer than an empty house. See if you can get a friend to hang out at your apartment while you are go away.
* Temporarily halt mail and newspaper delivery while you are on vacation. Piles of newspaper lying around lets passersby know that the house is empty.
* If you keep a garden have them watered by someone. Or ensure the potted plants are not visible from outside. Untended and dying plants are evidence that the home is untenanted.
* Put lights and tv on timers. Several rooms should have timers on lighting. The lights should be switched on and off in a natural sequence. The timer should turn living room lights on at sundown. At bedtime the living room lights should go off and the lights in your bedroom should turn on.
If you commonly switch on tv at 9 and it stays switched on till its time for you to turn in the timer should do the same thing. The lights in the house may be on but the tv being off might be enough evidence that no one is really home.
* Get a neighbor to come in to your place often. Curtains and windows being opened points out that the house is inhabited.
* If you rent the home you might let the landlord know that you are going out of town. The homeowner may want to keep tabs on the apartment.
* If you have installed a security system see to it that the apartment sitter knows how to run it.
* Make sure you leave your contact details with the neighbor. The person checking up on the apartment should be informed about who to call should there be a problem.
