Is your apartment or home to be unoccupied for even a few days while you travel? That is the time it is most vulnerable to burglars breaking and entering it. Here are several things to do about it.
* The best deterrant is to have a sitter at home. A house where someone is staying is very likely safer than an apartment that is not occupied. Check if you can get a friend or relative to stay at your house for the time you are away.
* Temporarily discontinue newspaper and mail when you travel out of town. Mail and newspapers lying around announces that the home is empty.
* If you have potted plants that are visible arrange for them to be watered and kept well. Or Else shift the potted plants where they are not visible from the road. Plants dying from lack of care inform housebreakers that the home or apartment is unoccupied.
* Use timers for tv and lights. Lights in multiple rooms should be on timers. The way the lights are switched on and off should look natural. The lights in the living room should switch on at sunset. At your regular sleeptime the lights in the living room should turn off and turn on the bedroom lights.
If you generally switch on tv at 7 pm and it remains on till midnight set your timer to that schedule. Even if the lights are on the lack of light from the tv can clue in someone that the house is uninhabited.
* Request a neighbor to come in and check out your house frequently. Doors and windows being worked signals that the house is occupied.
* If you stay in a rented apartment it may be useful to tell the landlord that the home will be unoccupied. The owner may want to check on the home regularly.
* If you use a perimeter protection or other security system make it a point to see that the the person who is doing the house sitting recognises exactly how to operate it.
* See that the neighbor or house sitter can contact you. Whoever is keeping tabs on the apartment must be aware of who they should call if any issue should come up.
