* The best way out is to have someone stay at your apartment. Having someone in is normally safer than a home or apartment that is unoccupied. Try to arrange for a relative or a friend to hang out at your apartment while you go on vacation.
* Discontinue the newspaper and mail when you go on vacation. A full mailbox or newspaper piled up lets passersby know that the house is empty.
* If you have potted plants visible from outside arrange for them to be watered and kept well. Alternatively ensure that the potted plants are kept where they are not visible. Dying plants give away that the home is unoccupied.
* Timers on lights and tv will help. Use timers to control lights in many rooms. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. At sundown the living room lights should switch on. Subsequently at bedtime the living room lights should go off and the lightsin the bedroom should switch on.
If you usually turn the tv on at 8 pm and have it on till bedtime set your timer to that schedule. Even with lights switched on the lack of the tv's bluish glow may lead to suspiscion that the home is unoccupied.
* Find out if a neighbor will agree to drop in to your home regularly while you are away. Doors being opened and closed and windows too are all signs that the home is inhabited.
* If you rent the apartment or house tell the landlord that the apartment or home will be empty. Your landlord may want to keep an eye on it.
* If you use a home security system see that the housesitter is comfortable with how to run it.
* Ensure that the caretaker or house sitter can contact you. The person responsbile for checking into the house must be well aware of who they should notify should any issues come up.
