* The most sensible alternative is to have someone stay at your apartment. Having someone stay at your home is always safer than an uninhabited apartment. See if you can get a relative or friend to stay at home when you are away.
* Stop the newspaper and mail delivery when the apartment is empty. A mailbox that is overflowing or piles of newspaper is a sign that your house is empty.

If you generally switch on tv at 7 pm and have it on all evening till bedtime have your timer do the same. Even if the lights are on the absence of the tv's light shining through can give away that your house is empty.
* See if a neighbor will drop into your place often. Doors and windows being opened points out that the house is not empty.
* If you live in a rented home let the landlord know that the home will be unoccupied. The landlord may want to check up on it regularly.
* If you use a perimeter protection or other security system see to it that the the person who is doing the house sitting recognizes how to handle it.
* Make it a point to see that the house sitter knows how to contact you. Whoever is checking on the home should be informed about who they should contact if there is a problem.
