Is your apartment to be unoccupied for more than a day or two while you go out of town? That is the time your home is vulnerable to burglars breaking in. Here is a bunch of things you can do to make your home less vulnerable.
* The most effective solution is to have a someone occupying the house. Having someone in is commonly safer than a deserted home. Arrange for a relative or a friend to stay at your apartment while you travel.
* Halt the mail and newspaper when you go away. Mail spilling out of the mailbox announces that the home is empty.
* If you keep a garden get someone to come in and water them. Or move the potted plants away from sight. Plants dying slowly are a clue that nobody is home.
* Use timers for radio, tv and lights. Timers should be hooked to lights in multiple rooms. Use a natural looking sequence for the lights. For example turn on the living room lights at sunset. At the time you turn in the living room should have lights off and the lights in the bedroom should be switched on.
If you turn tv on at 7 most days and have it on till midnight or so set the timer accordingly. The living room light may be on but the tv being turned off can indicate that the house is uninhabited.
* Get a neighbor to come in and check out your house frequently. Curtains and windows being opened is evidence that the home is occupied.
* If you stay at a rented home you might let the landlord know that the house will be empty. The owner may want to check up on the home sometimes.
* If you have installed a security system make certain that the home sitter recognises how to use it.
* See that the house sitter or caretaker can reach you. The person keeping an eye on the house should be aware of who is to be informed should there be a problem.
