* Use timers to work tv and lights. Use timers on lights in several rooms. The lights should be switched on and off in a natural sequence. Living room lights should come on at sundown. When you go to bed the lights in your living room should be switched off and switch on the bedroom lights.
If you turn on tv at 7 pm every day and it stays switched on till its time for you to turn in set your timer to that schedule. The lights may be on but the absence of the tv glow might give away that this house is unoccupied.
* See if a neighbor can drop in to your apartment now and then. Windows being open now and then mean that the house is inhabited.
* If you rent an apartment it may be a good idea to notify the owner that you are traveling. Your houseowner may want to watch over the house.
* If you have installed a home security system ensure that the the person who is doing the house sitting is familiar with how to work it.
* Make it a point to see that the neighbor can reach you easily. Whoever is watching over the home must be well aware of who should be informed should any problems come up.
