Is your apartment to be left empty for a few days or weeks while you go on vacation? That is the time it is most susceptible to burglars breaking in. Here is what to help make your home safer.
* The best defense for your home is to get a home sitter. Having someone at home is normally safer than an empty house. Check if you can get a trustworthy friend to live at your house while you go on vacation.
* Stop your mail and newspaper when you go away. A mailbox filled to the brim informs potential thieves that the home is empty.

If you generally turn tv on at 8 pm most days and you watch it till 11 pm set your timer to that schedule. Though the lights may be on the absence of the tv's light shining through might indicate that no one is really home.
* Arrange for a neighbor to drop into your apartment on a regular basis. Doors and windows being worked convey that the house is not empty.
* If you stay in a rented apartment it is usually a good idea to tell the owner that you are traveling. The houseowner may want to check on the apartment or home regularly.
