Is your apartment or home to be unoccupied for a few days while you holiday? That is the time your apartment or home is most vulnerable to burglars breaking and entering it. Here are several things you can do.
* The best way to defend your apartment is to get someone staying at home. Having someone stay at home is always safer than an unoccupied home. See if you can get a friend or relative to stay at home for the time you are away.
* Temporarily stop mail delivery and newspaper delivery while you are away from home. Unread newspapers and an overflowing mailbox lets everyone know that the house is unoccupied.
* If you maintain potted plants that are visible from the road get someone to come in and water them. Or shift the potted plants where they are not visible from the road. Untended plants imply that the home or apartment is unoccupied.
* Use timers to operate lights and tv. Several rooms should have timers on lighting. Set the timings of the lights so it looks as if someone is home. For example turn on the living room lights at sunset. When you normally go to bed the living room lights should be turned off and turn on the bedroom lights.
If you turn tv on at 7 most days and it stays switched on till its time for you to turn in have the timer set accordingly. The living room light may be on but the absence of light from the tv may lead someone to suspect that the home is unoccupied.
* See if a neighbor will drop in and check on your place often. Windows and curtains being opened and closed gives evidence that the home is occupied.
* If you stay at a rented home it may be useful to tell the landlord that the house will be empty. Your houseowner may want to keep tabs on the home.
* If you have installed a home security system make sure the the person who is doing the house sitting recognizes how it is to be used.
* Make it a point to see that the house sitter knows how to contact you. The person keeping an eye on the house should be informed about who they should contact should there be a problem.
