The story of digital fire alarm systems

Is your house going to be empty for even a few days while you go on an outing? That is when your home is vulnerable to housebreaks. Here are several specific things to stop break ins.

* The most effective solution is to get someone staying at home. Having someone stay at your home is usually safer than an apartment that is not occupied. Make arrangements for a relative or a friend to hang out at your home when you are away.

* Halt your newspaper and mail while you are away. Unread newspaper and mail lets passersby know that the house is empty.

* If you have potted plants visible from outside have them maintained by someone. Or move the potted plants out of sight. Wilted and dying plants are an indication that the home is untenanted.

* It is a good idea to use timers on lights and tv. Lights in several rooms should be on timers. Use a natural looking sequence for lights. At dusk turn on the living room lights. Around the time your retire living room should turn dark and the bedroom lights should switch on.

If you on the tv set at 7 pm most days and have it on till midnight or so set your timer to that schedule. The lights in the house may be on but the absence of the tv glow can give a clue that no one is actually home.

* Find out if a neighbor will agree to come in to your apartment or home often. Doors being opened and closed and windows too signals that the house is inhabited.

* If you live on rent maybe you can tell the landlord that you are going away for a few days. Your landlord may want to check on the home regularly.

* If you have an alarm system active ensure that the housesitter recognises how to use it.

* See to it that you leave your contact details with the neighbor. Whoever is keeping tabs on the home must know who is to be informed if there is a problem.
