* The better alternative is to get a home sitter. Having someone stay at your home is commonly safer than an apartment that is not occupied. Try arranging for a relative or friend to hang out at your apartment while you travel.
* Discontinue the mail and newspaper when the house is empty. Unread newspaper and mail lets everyone know that your house is empty.
