* If you potted plants visibly placed get someone to come in and water them. Otherwise ensure that the potted plants are kept where they are not visible. Wilted plants tell the observer that the home is untenanted.
* Timers on lights and tv will help. Use timers on lights in several rooms. Set the timers to make the light sequence look natural. The living room lights should come on at sundown. At your regular sleeptime turn off the living room lights and the bedroom lights should be turned on.
If you usually switch tv on at 8 and it is always on till you go to bed set the timer accordingly. The living room light may be on but the absence of the tv can give a clue that this house is unoccupied.
* See if a neighbor will visit your home on a regular basis. Windows and curtains being worked mean that the house is not empty.
* If you stay in a rented apartment tell the owner that the house will be unoccupied. Your homeowner may want to check up on the home sometimes.
* If you have an alarm system installed see that the person who is house sitting is familiar with how to make it work.
* Make certain that you leave your contact details with the house sitter. Whoever is keeping tabs on the apartment must be aware of who they should contact should there be a problem.
